I'm about to get some jl audio component speakers. Do I NEED an amp to power them or can I hook them up to the headunit or something else? Thanks

if you want them to sound good you should amplify them... but if you cant swing an amp right now the HU will work...
but definately, the amp is the way to go.

Do you NEED it? No. Should you have it? YES! Big difference in sound quality.

celica sound system already pretty nice. but i would get a amp anyways in the near future

ya...u dont need it. but if you have the amp, the sound will be a lot better.

Do you NEED it? No. Should you have it? YES! Big difference in sound quality. yes, need is a relative word - imo an amp is necessary to get the most out of aftermarket speakers. I just upgraded my head unit to an Eclipse 8443 with 8 volt preamps and my JL front components (XR 650CSI's) and amp (300/2) are on the way...
