I have a 03 Celica GT.
And I just started noticing that when im my garage
and I move my shifter for left to right (basiclly making sure its in neutral) it makes this tink tink tink noise. (lol thats the only way I can expain it.)
It drives perfectly fine and shifts fine but I just thought it was weird. its like its hitting metal or something.
Just wanted to know if anyone else has that problem.

Let me ask you a few questions...

1. Is the sound coming from the shifter, or from under the hood?

2. Is it kind of a squeaking sound?

If the sound is coming from under the hood, then your shift linkage may need a squirt of lithium grease on it. To do that, pop the hood, and have someone in the car keep shifting until you can pinpoint the part of the linkage to spray. I did that to my car because it would squeak whenever I shifted into second. Been perfect for about 10k miles now.

If the sound is coming from the shifter, then pop the lower console and shift boot off, and try spraying some grease down there too.

hey Slidr, what if you can't shift into 1st on dead stop? when i stop at traffic light for more then 3sec on neutral, when the light changes i go into 1st but it get stuck, like something is bloking it from going into first gear, i have to wiggle the knob or shift into 3rd or 4th then back to first that's the only way it'll go in first smoothly. i press on the clutch 2-3 times and still having a hard time going into first. The dealer couldn't find anything wrong with it, i think the dealer mechanic are idiots they don't know what to look for or where to find it. i still have 1yr of power train warranty left so either way i'm planning to bring the car back and make them replace the clutch disc. But wanna see if you or other people can give me an insight on what's going on if you can.
thanks

Its not comming from under the hood it sounds more like its comming from underneith the car. Like its maybe hitting the exhaust or something. Its not a squeaking its a metal hitting metal sound. Just going from side to side in neutral.
It doesnt do it when going in to 1st thru 5th.
