Thickness does not necessarily equal strength. There are many other factors from materials to manufacturing techniques that come into play. High quality Japanese manufacturers, such as Bomex, prefer thin, light weight Fiberglass. This thin Fiberglass is not fragile or cheap like some low quality no-name-brand kits out there. Some of the cheap low-quality kits are made of thick strong Fiberglass. This can be a disadvantage as the overly rigid part is harder to install, especially if the fitment is even slightly off.

I've delt with thick Fiberglass kits before... its NOT fun thumbsdown
...if the fitment is slightly off, it wont bend into correct position, causing the kit to look cheap

so we can say that 4 layer fiber glass is better than the 7, and the 4layer can be modified and fixed to have a good fitment and an original look thumbsup, right?

Four or seven layers of what weight cloth or matting? For example: seven layers of 1.5oz CSM which is typically used in the production of aftermarket kits would result in a kit that is over .28 thick, four layers would be over .17 and both would weigh a ton. If someone is actually making kits using 5 or 7.5 oz cloth (not likely because of the expense of manufacturing) then four layers is fine with the additional lamination on the edges. Most kits are a 3oz lay up with the edges being 4.5oz. There is no benefit to thick kits, as post cure distortion will affect the fareness and fitment as Isaac has noted. smile
