What do people mean by go easy on the clutch?? Also when you are stopped at a light, should you be in 1st with clutch down waiting or in N with just the brake. Is this what is meant, like dont hold clutch in when dont have to?? Cause when i am stuck in downtown traffic i use the clutch all the time with stop and go traffic, just want to know if im doing something wrong?? Thanks

the clutch isnt the part that is wearing out when you have your foot pressed all the way down on the clutch at a stoplight.

think about it . . . why would the clutch wear when it is disengaged?

i forget what part is the one that wears out because of that, but it's not the clutch

I rode with a friend who drove with a stick. Some ppl just can't drive one. He was constantly cruising with the clutch in, or keeping his foot on the gas for about a sec or two and then releasing the clutch after dropping it in gear. rolleyes

EDiTED: Oh going easy on the clutch means smoothly releasing it and not popping it.

Clutch wear is accelerated if the transmission is left in gear with the clutch pushed in while waiting for traffic lights. Waiting in traffic with the vehicle in gear and the clutch pushed in loads the release bearing. Over time, this shortens release bearing life and can cause noise.

Driving behaviors and conditions that decrease clutch service life include riding the clutch pedal, high RPM engagement, excessive slipping, harsh downshifting, lugging the engine, excessive vehicle loading, and engine, transmission and suspension modifications.

Clutches are only manufacturered to be pressed and depressed, not pressed and held down. Your clutch will move smoother for longer if you don't stand on it all the time. I've always taken it out of gear and cruised up to a light in neutral and sat there with just the brake. It's much easier on your engine.

Knowing the path and choosing the path are two different things.

I do this too. Some ppl downshift when they're coming to a stop because "it saves the brakes". Well...I have 3 reasons why I'd rather just cruise with the brake than downshift.

1. You CANNOT completely stop using the clutch alone, therefore you still need to use the brake.
2. Brakes are easier and cheaper to replace than a whole clutch.
3. From experience, I can normally feel when the brakes need replacing while if I notice something strange with the clutch its almost already too late.

It's all about SMOOTHNESS! happywink I still downshift when I need to, but never to stop. It's the brakes I'd rather "compromise" over my engine/clutch.

I agree with that clutch is EXPENSIVE to replace.

I had the clutch replaced with an XTD stage 2 with the light weight flywheel and in 18 months of moderate street driving and it's gone. Would like to keep to only replacing the plate only and came across this set up from TSR-TRU Speed Racing and I've not had dealings with this product. Anyone know of a good clutch plate set up for daily driving and occasionally launching from light.
