I have noticed that on mostly JDM street cars that fire or a flame comes out the back tailpipe?

What causes this? High boost
Is this bad?

It's just an add on right at the tip

it's like a pilot light hooked up to a propane tank

what beans said.

it's worth noting that jdm just means "japanese domestic market" and therefore quite obviously almost all jdm cars do NOT have flame exhausts.

while they are more popular in japan, the vast majority of even modded jdm cars do not use it. it's impractical and totally a show mod.

do you guys watch rally? all the rally cars have flames coming out of their exhausts, and im 100% sure they dont have propain tanks or whatever just for looks

the real reson the "shoot fire" rofl is there running rich and they have a open exhaust and thats unburnt fuel from the motor that is now burning out the exhaust "thats what real power looks like" thumbsup

thats why only ricers would do that on the street... rally cars need to run rich because of the conditions the engine works at.

basically the fire is the same thing as what an afterburner does in a jet engine, it lights unburnt fuel... but in a jet, this gives it more power... doesnt quite work like that in a car.

It's caused by the rapid drop of RPM's from high RPM's where lots of gas was being combusted but has abruptly come to a stop. All that gas needs to go somewhere and most of it goes into the exhaust manifold. Some goes back into the gas tank if the fuel system encompasses a return fuel line. This is more prone to happen to car's with forced induction with high fuel enrichment.

Only tuned turbo engine will need that.
The kit is called "Rev Limitter" in japan.
And, in street, that's only for show.

This is the right answer right here, Also a car with a timing problem will shoot fire.

Oh and the old school hot rodders do it this way...


They run a seperate coil that runs to a spark plug in the exhaust pipe, and a momentery kill switch on the motor's ignition. They turn on the second coil then rev up to almost redline, push the kill switch and a ten foot flame comes out on the rev down then they release the button at 1000 rpms to reignite the motor.

no. The misfiring system can create the conditions needed though.
This fire actually doesn't happen all the time, many times you'll hear the bang but see no flame. Usually, only very highly tuned cars will produce it because they are running rich. They must run rich for them to work right. I could get into it but it'd take me a LONG time to fully explain.
However, there are kits you can buy to create the look. Anyone who buys a kit like that is a loser. It's like all the Integra owners who put type-r on their cars. The USA only got 500 type-r's...so how exactly am I seeing 10 of them at a meet in a backwoods town in vermont? lol. Answer...they aren't type-r's. If you go to a meet and see 40 type r's. Odds are that only one is a real one. no joke on that. I'm kinda a "imposter" car expert. I just can't stand people trying to get the status and respect of a sweet ride without actually paying for it. It takes away from the people who actually have one. It's really unfair.

it doesn't mean the car has a turbo. It means it's running a extra rich fuel mixture. There are several ways for this. One: Get an aftermarket flame kit [Linked Image from stcd.sgnonline.com]
Two: Something is very wrong. Your car is about to die. eek
Three: Your car is highly tuned (ricers need not apply) and due to this, you need to run a extra rich fuel mixture.

It is possible to get the flame without a turbo although usually you'll just get the bang and see no flame.

lol. The lower ones were removed like, later that day. The four upper ones are essential, without them I couldn't rally at full speed. They aren't there for looks (although I loke the look of them) they are there for functionality.
BTW they are real rally competition foggers, not your 40 walmart specials folks...these are the real deal, look small but put out more light than I've seen from PIAA, Hella, or any other. I was seriously impressed when I got them off a guy at a SCCA ProRally event.

I wonder what the ol school supra would do with a straight through exhaust. Those things run soooooooooo rich it is rediculous. Even with a lexus afm (~15% bigger with same signal to ecu) they still run rich. Hmmmm, things to do if i cant sell it by summer. 2k is the asking price btw and thats workable if someone wants to deal.

my car shoots fireballs, 99% of you dont know what ur talkin about at all and have no clue about cars you dont need a kit , ur car isnt gonna die, my car does it and when it started doin it is i had a 100% atmosphere blow off valve and i had no cats in my car and that was with the stock turbo it still shot fireballs out the back and now with my bigger turbo the fireballs are bigger some of them hit my spoiler and are usually blue fire

Sweet that must look so tight when it happens eek, I read that when the blow off valve vents air into the atmosphere the fuel gets rich and causes the fireball, I just wanted to know for sure. Isn't it better to have it vent back into the system. Also boxer4turbo can your car catch on fire? prbably not though since the flame disapears quickly.

Dude, before you go of on us, read posts. There are many of us (me included) who gave reasons other than
1.car dead
2.kit

If you read the poosts above, you'd see at least 1/4th of us wrote "rich fuel environment". lemme guess, you added turbo, a few other parts, new ecu, and by the time you were done, your car is running rich...
I'm not trying to put you down here. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just asking that 1. If you have something to correct people on, be a little nicer than telling eceryone they don't know anything. 2. make absolutly sure the point you are trying to make has not already been made.
A good way to emphisize a point that has already been been made is to quote the person who made it and write your approval underneath.
