Oh man, this is so bad...

I was looking at my milage today, it noticed it just crossed 12k. I mentioned casually to my dad "I think I'll go tomorrow to get an oil change, it's been about 3000 miles since you did it..."

His response: "I did it? I've never changed your oil."

eek

He told me back around 9k miles that he'd take it in for a change while I was gone for the weekend, but forgot. So I assumed he got it done. It's now been 6500 miles since my last oil change. rofl

Get that sludge out of there! Toyota makes a reliable car, but don't miss out on the oil changes. I've gone 20,000+ miles on other cars I owned, just add a quart of oil here and there, but I would never treat my Celica like that. The horror.

The proper way to gain the best protection.

Due to the way oil breaks down/protects your car, 3000 miles is actually NOT usually the right milage to change. Oil ususally doesn't provide it's best protection until 2500-4000 miles.
The proper way of telling when to change your oil is as follows.

Start with fresh oil, filled to proper amount. Check the oil every few days. When you notice that you have to add a little bit of oil...look at your milage. Now drop 1000 miles off of that. Now you know when to change your oil. Don't be alarmed if the figure is 6500 or more. To be on the safer side though, if the end figure is above 5500, change it at 5000 anyway. If you drive your car really hard, this will reflect on your usage. Also, if you race your car, ice racing, track, autoX, drag, whatever, regardless of the above method you should change your oil every 1500 miles or so.

Don't get it???

Check your user manual. What does it say?

Mine says 9500 miles or once a year..

Changing engine oil at 3000 miles is spineyes

changing the oil at 3K (full syn) is a little pointless.

I used to do this, and I noticed the oil was the same color going in as it was coming out.

I see it this way:

3K: Jiffy Lube wants you to frequently change it so they make more money
7K: Toyota wants you to run your engine slowly into the ground so they can sell you a new car or new engine after 100K

5K: HAppy medium between the two. I change mine roughly ever 5k-7k depending on the type of driving and weather. It's been 6500K since my last change, and the oil is STILL amber. I'll probably change it in the next few weeks.

My dad runs Mobil 1 (like me) and changes it every 10-15K and doesn't seem to have any problems. Then again, he doesn't rev to redline all the time like I do spineyes

My last change was at 3500, but it was 3 months after the date they put on my sticker... does it really matter the date as long as you get the milage right?
