Hello everyone. I'm back with another question...

Currently I have the VVTL-i in my GTS manual, but I've been reading some threads and came across another engine called a 3s-gte. I was wondering what the difference between these two are, and if they have the same capabilities.

To my understanding, the 3s-gte has more hp, but I wanted to know if it hits "lift". Also, is it capable of having the same mods connected to it- such as AEM CAI and TRD exhaust? Turbo charger and Nitrous?

Could someone please shed light on my ignorance. Any information on the comparison of these two engines would be appreciated.

the 3sgte cannot hit lift but in my opinion it owns the 2zzge...the 3sgte is from the mr2 turbo and i believe in the early models celica gts (3rd gen is the one with the most hp output) there is no need to put a aem intake on the 3sgte for it is turbocharged from the factory and can handle large amounts of boost...not sure about running n2o

3sgte has turbo it was in the last model of the mr2 pumped out 200hp in japan the all wheel drive celicas had this engine and came 245hp stock. how ever it never came here (the engine) its possible to put the 3sgte in the celica from the mr2 but its not worth the time and money, for the same price ucan put an xs engineering and it would be a lot faster.

You're saying, if I keep my 2zz-ge and turbocharge it, it would be faster than 3sgte?

more like 250whp but with more modification like making a 2liter you should get 280 and a little more messing around you should easily get over 300whp

Yes, though if you got a 3sgte and turbo that...it will be faster then the 2zzge. The 3sgte is very powerful. In a recent issue of HCI, there was a 3sgte powered 7th gen celica. Has around 500-600 hp as of yet and is owning all. You can prolly do it with around $10,000. And as said, 3sgte does not have Lift.

2zz is known for lift, and 3S GTE is known for its incredibly high tolerance of high PSI with stock internals. IMO, 3S-GTE > 2ZZGE

Exactly, it's one step below the 2jz (supra engine).

Actualy, the 245HP version did come to the states, albeit in a very limited quantity, they came in the Celica all-trac turbo option, which only sold about 1000 units domestically, they are highly sought after, and nearly identical to the jdm equivalent.

Oh one more thing, the hotchkis celica (which is supercharged by the way) makes about 300 WHP, so yes, with the right tuning, the 2ZZ would own a 3sgte.

3sgte is a badass motor though: top moun intercooler, and can handle lots of boost, tuner parts are available and plentiful; a full-race 3sgte can put down numbers approaching 400 HP with a full build, and has become quite popular, mostly because it was in the MR2!

i look at it like this..you hit 300 HP and yes, the celica being 2800 something pounds(?), it will be fast as hell. BUT, our trannys can't handle that type of power, let alone you will have no traction AT ALL. you would have to decrease the boost to less than 250 HP..as our trannys bust at around 250 HP. but even then, you would still have traction problems and your car would be useless if all you're doing is spinning your front tires.

the 3s-gte however requires an AWD transmission format, and it is built to handle that kind of power. when you think about it, the amount of money for a good turbo kit, LSD, reinforced internals, 2.0L stroker kit(like someone said), and a busted tranny along with the best tires you can buy is a shitload of money..i would estimate it being about 8000+. with a bit more(considering you ahve the money), you could drop a 3s-gte in your car and take care of any traction problems and transmission problems, like owning all the cars on the road.

just my .02

Sure, but you know what? you say the celica tranny is weak... so is the motor when you get down to it, everythings cast aluminum, cylinder walls are thin, rods, mains and bearings can't handle much over 200 HP, same thing with balves & springs. it stands to reason if you're dumping enough money into your 2zz to make an even 300 HP, you're gonna give the tranny some work too. and trannys arent as fragile as you think, most of the internals consist of hardcore steel gears, it will take waay more then the celica's motor can dish out to wreck it, I think you'd need to think about upgrading your axles/cv joints before you'd need to worry about the tranny having problems.

The Hotchkis celica is running aftermarket clutch, flywheel and LSD in it's tranny, and it's also using Red Line tranny fluid too. Guess what? John's celica is pushing 300 HP, on a nearly stock transmission, and it's worked fine for him... It stands to reason if his celica can do it on a stock tranny with a ligher flywheel, better clutch and LSD, then I'm more inclined to believe John Hotchkis then you.

My 2 cents.

Oh yea, one more thing, our celicas are already nose heavy as-is, they have a tendency to understeer badly because of this, if you put a heavy mill like a 3s-gte in the front, you're gonna get more HP, but the car will be heavier, and you'll compound the celica's shortcomings. I'td be a fun drag car, but it would handle like ass.

Actually, the 3s will still cost more, due to the extensive chassis fabrication to convert to AWD.

Besides, if you swap in a 3sgte, hell you're cars gonna be illegal to begin with (daily drivers, huh?) All engines would be older than the car itself, and it would probably fail emissions in most states. definitely ain't carb-legal. You would need to swap in a current 3s-ge, and turbo it, or get a modern JDM motor (which may not pass emissions either, depending on where you live)

There are laws regarding swaps for each state, Yes, the swaps can be done, since most the guys that do it are racing them only, that's a good thing, but if it's you're daily driver, you may not be legal if you do a swap where you live.

P.S. if you can't deal with wheelspin, you should be driving something more conventional. Cars with lots of hp & torque are gonna break tires loose, and if you can't deal with it, you shouldn't drive a performance car, and have no buisness behind the wheel of one.
