Ok,AEM CAI is two pieces correct? Would it be possible to attach the filter to the first piece to make it somewhat a short ram? My question arrises from this thread https://celicahobby.com/ubbthreads/thread.f_1869842740_0_collapsed_5__1.html. Also k&n makes a product like this but not for the celica yet http://www.knfilters.com/typhoon/tthesystem.html its the CCA.

you probably could..but it would most likely be less efficient than a shortram.

the advantage of cai over shortram is ONLY cooler air.

shortram has less air resistance--less backpressure (because it has a MUCH smoother bends. cai's don't have as smooth as bends because it has to 'bend' around objects in the engine bay to snake its way to the wheel well).

so, in effect, the first piece of the cai could act as a shortram, but the bends won't be as smooth (because it wasnt meant to suck air at that point and it's still 'snaking') and thefefore backpressure is increased and therefore power gains are decreased.

just get shortram--cheaper AND more effective thumbsup

i really don't know anything about the 1st gen though (other than it sucks compared with the 2nd gen and injen's).

figured he was talking about that (whether or not it's really two pieces i do not know...just assumed that he was and that it was) thumbsup

i have a 1st gen... and the only difference is where the MAFS is ... and that cannot hinder performance...

then i dunno...maybe the bends in the 1st gen are too restrictive to airflow confused

i do know the 2nd gen is much better (thats relative..the first gen gave like 1-2 horses..the 2nd gen gives like 2-4 horses. so even though its a 100% increase, it's still only about 2 horses)

in any case we figured out that both versions of the aem cai have only 1 pipe and therefore the initial question is invalid.

Uh, the AEM CAI is one tube that snakes its way down towards the driver's side wheel in order to take in cooler air. There is only one place to attach the filter to it, and that's at the end. If you wanted to make it shorter, then you COULD cut the tube down, but that would be stupid because:
1. It would look gay.
2. You spent more for a CAI and just wound up making it into a Short Ram, which you could have paid less for in the first place.
3. The intake doesn't have some magical power that makes the air colder when it enters it , it simply reaches into areas where cooler air can be found, and sucks it in from there. Believe it or not, but some people actually think that the CAI Intake is hooked up to the AC, and that it chills the air. spineyes rofl
4. If you were to cut the CAI down to make it look like a Short Ram, it wouldn't work, and you could fuck up your car. NOTICE that in the picture below, if you were to cut the tube, you would remove a piece of the pipe that has a hose connected to it.

Also, I assume that he is talking about cutting the pipe down, cause that's the only thing I can make sense of.

See how tubes go into the intake? Those aren't there for appearances.

ok, didn't know aem was one piece. i thought it was two pieces for two diff reasons, First. the placement of the bypass valve i thought went somewhere in the middle. Second, i was looking at this pic http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...bayphotohosting [cgi.ebay.com]

if you put the bypass valve in, you have to cut it yourself.

The only thing that needs to be connected to the pipe is the MAF sensor. That's the only thing that I had to connect to my Blit intake. But yeah, it's pretty dumb buying a CAI & then cutting it to make it a SR. You'd have to find some sort of adapter to connect the filter to the tube. And it looks like it might be a tight fit to get the filter to fit. The filter might rub agains the fuse box or it may not clear the hood. In the end, just go with a SR.

The MAF is not the only thing needed to be connected to the pipe. A few vacuum hoses need to be connected also.

Also, in response to the guy who created this thread...The picture of the intake in the eBay auction is not the one that the Celica uses. It's most likely one meant to go into a different car and they just used a generic picture.

Why not just CAI the whole time?

Hydro lock won't happen unless your filter is SUBMERGED in water. Trust me, I've gone through puddles half way up my wheel before, and nothing. It's not gonna happen. Just don't wade through any floods.
