on the cams of the GTS there is a second set of lobes. somewhere around 6000 rpm the engine swiches over and uses these more extreme lobes, which let more air in and out of the cylinder.

that gives you difference between the gt and the gts. 40hp
its like hondas v-tec. its basically something like a mini supercharger that kicks in after 6000rpm.

lift is when you hit 6000 rpm's
and then your car starts to transform.
once it hits 6k the front end lift's up,
the front wheels/axles extend out and form the arms and the passenger cabin forms a body and a head is formed by the hood/hood scoop.
then the rear axle and hatch separates into two legs and your 3 ft high wing spreads out and is finally usefull.
the engine at this point is capable of taking you to mach 2 and you basically waste that honda civic.
next thing you know it transforms back to a regular celica grin

The 2ZZ-GE combines the VVT-i continuously variable intake-valve-timing device with the new VVT-L, a Honda VTEC-like variable-lift and -timing system, employing two sets of cam profiles for both intake and exhaust. Below 6000 rpm, the VVT-L employs the low- and mid-speed cam profiles, and above 6000 rpm, the high-speed profiles. The high-revving 2ZZ-GE's camshafts are sprayed with lubricant oil. Timing and lift characteristics of the 1ZZ-FE and 2ZZ-GE engine are shown in the table.

VVTL-i

The new 180hp Celica GTS (USA/CAN) now features the amazing VVTL-i engine developed by Toyota and Yamaha. Based on the standard 140hp 1.8 VVT-i, the VVTL-i has both Variable Valve Timing and Variable Valve Lift. The latter is achieved by an extra cam lobe that is brought into play by the engine electronics via a hydraulic actuator.

Interestingly, Toyota have set up the system so that the extra power kicks in over 5000 rpm. The torque curve of a VVTL-i is almost exactly the same as a VVT-i up to that point and then suddenly, where the VVT-i begins to run out of steam and revs, the new engine develops a new lease of life producing the extra 49 bhp right through to its 8000 rpm redline.
...

The diagram below shows the two cams which are both always turning, and the hydraulic actuator that moves the 'Rocker Arm Pin' into place at a preset engine speed.
