cams are the things that push down the intake and exhaust valves...

thats the simple version of what they do.

and yes they can add upwards of 20hp if they were machined properly and there was room for improvement over stock.

i don't think you would need them for the GTS.. the cam timing and lift are already super aggressive. well maybe an exhaust cam mod would help confused

the reason so many companies are having trouble designing cams for the 2zz is because toyota made em damn near perfect.

Build the rest of your engine up. Get stiffer valve springs and forge your block and crank to heavier standards. Then get some Darkin sleeves if they make them, then check Toda for some cams for the 2ZZ-CE.Get some timer pulleys from AEM and overlap the valve timing ever so slighty. NA power is the way to go if you want power though the entire powerband.

Also because of the physical characteristics of the lobes, they're made out of 2 metals or whatnot. They're not your average cam shaft.

This may be off the topic, but what about the engine that was originally for Christian Rado the same as ours (GTS) before the switch to the Tundra engine I believe. There were plans for some nice titanium engine parts and they had them. If I remember they said our engine could hold up to at least 500 HP w/out the lift engaged for turbo drag reasons. I'm sure they had custom cams from TRD. Where are the specs for that engine? What about a tuned down version of that? Anybody know what I'm talking about? I know the cost would be tremendous.

NA cams & pistons - no

cams and pistons for a FI application - yes

why spend like 2-3 grand on a GT to make 160whp? you could just get a GTS

but if you plan on going FI then there is reason to do internals.

true, but I've put so much into my ride already that I'd rather mod it further than trade it in

although $3000 is a bit steep for a performance upgrade, if it gives me respectable hp gains for a GT then I'm on it

cams, pistons, connecting rods ... thats at least 2 grand in parts, and most people, incuding myself are not about to tear down their engine in their driveways even if they knew how to do it.

therefore you pay a shop bank to do it, because its not easy, and it takes a hell of a long time to do... so about 1000- 1300 in shop fees will set you well over 3k to make 160 whp in a GT that now, cannot be turbocharged as effectively as a stock GT due to NA cams.

get a TURBO it costs olmost the same and there's room to make mods after... once you put NA cams in, FI is a waste and you might as well tear it down again an put some FI cams in.

I guess a turbo would be more cost effective
