Manual gear oil change instructions
August 15, 2001 - CelicaGarage
You will need the following items
2.3 litres of 75w90 GL4 or GL5 gear oil (GT uses only 1.9 litres)
Suggest using Redline 75w95NS oil. (don't use Redline 75w90) without the NS
Full Synthetic is the best!
10mm, 17mm, 24mm socket wrench
1. You will need to take the driver's side plastic engine cover off.
2. You will need to remove the fill and drain plugs as shown below. Make sure not to lose the metal gasket with the bolts.
3. After it's drained, use a funnel and tube like this. Open the hood and drop the tubing down into the engine compartment and into the fill hole. Plug up the drain hole.
4. Fill with the proper amount of oil. You have the right amount when the oil starts to leak out the fill hole. should be about 2.3 litre for a GTS and 1.9 litres for a GT. Plug up the fill hole and replace the plastic cover on the bottom of the car. You are done.
My car feels so much smoother now when shifting. It's like a got a new car now.

I just changed the oil in my transmission today, and the picture was helpful, but I discovered that the GT is laid out a little differently. (I'm assuming the picture above is from a GTS.)
The GT has the fill plug to the left of those wires, and it's 24mm, just like the drain plug.

Don't use Redline 75w90ns. Use Redline MT90. It's for our transmissions which have synchros. MT90 has an ingredient or something for synchros which is crucial.
Remember, Redline MT90.

Also make sure you have a large oil catch pan to catch that stuff. I only caught 1/3 of the oil and the rest got on my garage floor.

I used Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Oil (75W-90) and after the trans service the gears shifted so much smoother. Definitely make changing your trans fluid a must!!!

What about the tranny filter? Where is that located?

there is no filter in manual transmission.

Ok my question is where does the fluid go? I've looked all over my engine bay to look for where the transmission fluid goes in but i can't find it if anyone has a pix of this i really appreciate it if u can post it. I have a 2000 GTS if it makes any difference thanks.

Just a Tip when draining the oil. Loosen the fill plug about half-way but do not removed it. Then removed the drain plug. This is to prevent it from splashing all over the floor. Remove the fill plug when the oil starts to drain slowly.
I just found this out after spilling it all over the place.
