Just bought a 2000 celica gt-s. Wanting to know what you guys think of this. Before i bought the car i asked the dude a few questions, what oil did you use in it? He says hes been using castrol 10w-40. What octane does the car take? He says i have always used 87 octane. The car has 123k miles on it, he has had it since 100k. You guys think using this octane has hurt the car any? What about the oil? I noticed on the oil cap it recommends 5w-30 so i changed oil with that type. Should i continue to use 87 octane or move up to premium? The car had CEL on and i had it checked it was system too lean and catalyst system efficiency below threshold. Air box wasnt clamped correctly so im guessing that was system too lean. As for catalyst im guessing using 87 octane for 20k miles has something to do with that? I reset the CEL and it has yet to come back on and has been drove around 150 miles since then. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Its possible but cats go bad on high mileage cars.

Yes start using higher octane fuel, the GTS is supposed to use premium. The 10-40 oil is a little thicker than the 5-30, it may not have damaged anything but it probably left some sludge behind over the years. Get some of that sea foam additive and follow the directions on the can for crankcase flushing before your next oil change and then use 5-30 from now on.

But do you think the low octane damaged it any? I would think the car would not perform as well knowing 87 octane doesnt burn as hot, and i would think it might even start effecting valves and injectors?

I wouldn't be worried about that stuff at this point man. I mean it is reliable right? No issues when you drive it and still goes when you mash the gas.

Its got 123K on it so everything about that car is gonna be wearing out, Just replace worn out parts, feed it the right fluids and don't beat on it too much and it should last to 200k or more.
